All networks are a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices,\u00a0 or other devices connected to each other to enable data sharing.<\/span> The Internet is an excellent example of a network. it connects millions of people around the world on the big network.<\/span> On the right, an example of a home network with multiple computers and other network devices all connected to each other and to the Internet.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We have developed this practical reference guide to explain the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>types of<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0the networks<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0in use today, and what they serve.<\/span><\/h6>\n

1. Personal Network<\/span><\/h2>\n

The smallest and most basic type of network, a PAN, consists of a wireless modem, a computer or two, telephones, printers, tablets, etc., and is organized around of a person in a building.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>These types of networks are typically located in small offices or residences and are managed by a person or organization from a single device.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span>Local Network<\/span><\/span><\/span>(LAN)<\/span><\/h2>\n

We are convinced that you have already heard of these types of networks – local networks are the most discussed networks, one of the most common, the most original and the simplest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Local networks<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0 connect groups of computers and low-voltage devices over short distances (in a building or between two or three buildings close to each other) to share information and resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Companies generally manage and maintain local networks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Using routers, LANs can connect to wide area networks (WAN, explained below) to quickly and securely transfer data.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/span>\u00a0Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Functioning as a local network, WLANs use<\/span> wireless network technology\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0, such as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Wireless<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Typically visible in the same types of applications as local area networks, these types of networks do not require devices to use physical cables to connect to the network.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span>\u00a0Campus Network (CAN)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Larger than local networks, but smaller than metropolitan networks (MAN, explained below), these types of networks are typically used in universities, large school districts or small businesses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They can be spread across multiple buildings close enough to each other to allow users to share resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/span>\u00a0Metropolitan Network (MAN)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

These types of networks are larger than local area networks but smaller than wide area networks – and include elements from both types of networks.<\/span> MANs\u00a0 cover a whole geographical area (typically a city or campus, sometimes).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Ownership and maintenance are managed by one person or company (local council, large company, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n

6.<\/span>\u00a0Wide Area Network (WAN)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Slightly more complex than a<\/span>\u00a0LAN<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>, a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>WAN\u00a0<\/span><\/a>connects computers to each other over longer physical distances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This allows computers and low voltage devices to be connected to each other remotely over a large network to communicate even when they are distant from each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Internet is the simplest example of a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>WAN\u00a0<\/span>network<\/span>,<\/span> connecting all the computers around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Due to the extended reach of the WAN, it is generally owned and managed by multiple administrators or the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

7.<\/span>Storage Area Network (SAN<\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n

As a dedicated broadband network that connects shared pools of storage devices to multiple servers, these types of networks do not rely on a local or wide area network.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Instead, they move storage resources away from the network and place them in their own high-performance network.<\/span><\/p>\n

SANs can be accessed in the same way as a drive connected to a server.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Types of storage area networks include converged, virtual, and unified SANs.<\/span><\/p>\n

8.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>System\u00a0<\/span>network (also called SAN)<\/span><\/h2>\n

This term is relatively new in the last two decades.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It is used to explain a relatively local network designed to provide a high-speed connection in server-to-server applications (clustered environments), storage networks (also called “SANs”), and processor-to-processor applications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Computers connected to a SAN operate as a single system at very high speeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Passive Optical Local Network\u00a0<\/span>(POLAN)<\/span><\/h2>\n

As an alternative to traditional switch-based Ethernet LANs,<\/span> POLAN technology can be integrated into structured cabling\u00a0<\/span> solve problems related to the management of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Ethernet protocols<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>traditional<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0and network applications such as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0POE<\/span>(Power over Ethernet).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Point-to-multipoint local network architecture, POLAN uses optical separators to divide an optical signal of one strand of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>optical fiber<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0single mode<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>in several signals for users and devices.<\/span><\/p>\n

10.<\/span>\u00a0Private Enterprise Network<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>\u00a0EPN<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>)<\/span><\/h6>\n

These types of networks are built and owned by companies that want to securely connect their different locations to share computing resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

11.<\/span>\u00a0Virtual Private Network<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>\u00a0VPN<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>)<\/span><\/h6>\n

By extending a private network over the Internet, a<\/span>\u00a0VPN<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>allows its users to send and receive data as if their devices were connected to the private network, even if they are not.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Through a virtual point-to-point connection, users can access a private network remotely.<\/span><\/p>\n
